Natural sandstone is a beautiful outdoor paving material, but it needs the right approach when it becomes covered in algae, moss, lichen, black spotting and general dirt.

At The Jet Wash Fella, I provide professional natural sandstone cleaning across Hampshire, helping homeowners restore tired patios, pathways, steps, driveways and swimming pool surrounds.

With around 20 years of hands-on exterior cleaning experience, I don’t believe in simply turning up and blasting every surface with the same pressure. Sandstone is a relatively soft and porous natural stone, so the cleaning method needs to be appropriate for the particular paving and its condition.

My aim is simple: clean the sandstone properly while respecting the surface underneath.

WHY NATURAL SANDSTONE NEEDS CAREFUL CLEANING

Natural sandstone is very different from concrete, block paving and many manufactured paving products.

Its natural texture and porosity can allow moisture, dirt and organic growth to become established within the surface. Shaded areas can be particularly prone to algae, moss and lichen.

Over time, sandstone can become:

• Green with algae
• Covered in moss
• Marked with lichen
• Darkened by general dirt and grime
• Affected by black spotting
• Slippery when wet
• Dull and discoloured compared with its original appearance

This is why I don’t recommend treating every sandstone patio like an ordinary concrete surface.

SANDSTONE IS A SOFTER NATURAL STONE

One of the biggest mistakes when cleaning sandstone is using excessive pressure.

Too much pressure, particularly when used incorrectly or too close to the surface, can remove small pieces or slithers of stone. On some paving this can leave the surface looking rough, uneven or sharp.

The aim should be to remove the contamination without unnecessarily attacking the sandstone itself.

WHAT CAN CAUSE SANDSTONE TO BECOME SLIPPERY?

Algae, moss and other organic growth can make outdoor paving slippery, particularly when the surface is wet.

This can be especially noticeable on:

• Garden patios
• Sandstone pathways
• Steps
• Areas beneath trees
• Shaded patios
• Swimming pool surrounds
• Frequently damp areas

Professional cleaning can remove much of the surface contamination and improve the overall condition and appearance of the paving.

OUR NATURAL SANDSTONE CLEANING PROCESS

I use a considered cleaning process rather than relying on pressure alone.

1. INSPECTING THE SANDSTONE

Before cleaning begins, I look at the type and condition of the sandstone.

I check for:

• Existing damage
• Loose or deteriorated areas
• Previous cleaning
• Organic growth
• Black spotting
• Staining
• Damaged pointing
• Particularly soft or weathered areas

This helps determine the most suitable approach.

2. CLEARING THE AREA

Loose dirt, leaves, moss and other debris are cleared from the surface before the main cleaning process begins.

This gives the cleaning treatment and equipment a much better surface to work with.

3. APPLYING A SUITABLE CLEANING TREATMENT

Where appropriate, I apply a specialist cleaning treatment to help break down algae, moss, lichen and other organic contamination.

The treatment needs to remain active on the surface rather than simply being applied and immediately washed away.

4. ALLOWING THE TREATMENT TO WORK

Depending on the condition of the sandstone, the cleaning solution is given suitable dwell time to work on the contamination.

I normally aim for around 10–15 minutes, while making sure the treatment does not dry out on the stone.

Heavily contaminated areas may require additional attention.

5. CONTROLLED PRESSURE CLEANING

Once the treatment has had time to work, the sandstone can be carefully cleaned using controlled pressure.

The pressure and cleaning technique are adjusted according to the stone.

I don’t use excessive pressure simply to make the job look faster.

6. REPEATING THE PROCESS WHERE NECESSARY

Some sandstone patios have years of built-up contamination.

If black spots, lichen or stubborn organic growth remain, additional treatment and cleaning may be required.

The objective is to achieve the best practical result without unnecessarily damaging the natural stone.

REMOVING BLACK SPOTS FROM NATURAL SANDSTONE

Black spots are one of the most common questions I get about sandstone.

They can be particularly noticeable on lighter-coloured paving and can make an otherwise attractive patio look old and neglected.

WHY BLACK SPOTS CAN BE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE

Black spotting and lichen can become firmly established within the surface of the stone.

Pressure washing alone isn’t always enough.

A suitable treatment can help break down the contamination before controlled cleaning is carried out.

However, I don’t promise that every individual black mark will disappear completely. The result depends on the age of the contamination, the condition of the sandstone and how deeply established the staining has become.

NATURAL SANDSTONE PATIO CLEANING

Sandstone patios can look completely different after professional cleaning.

Years of algae, moss, lichen and general dirt can hide the natural colours and patterns within the stone.

Once the contamination has been removed, the natural variation in the sandstone can become much more noticeable.

This is one of my favourite surfaces to clean because you can sometimes see a remarkable difference between the condition of the patio before cleaning and the natural appearance revealed afterwards.

BRINGING OUT THE NATURAL COLOUR OF SANDSTONE

I don’t try to make every sandstone patio look artificially bright.

The aim is to remove the dirt and biological growth while allowing the natural colour, texture and character of the sandstone to show through.

Sandstone isn’t limited to patios.

CAN NATURAL SANDSTONE BE PRESSURE WASHED?

Yes, suitable natural sandstone can be cleaned using pressure washing equipment, but that doesn’t mean it should automatically be cleaned using maximum pressure.

Sandstone is a natural stone and can be softer and more vulnerable than many other paving materials.

This is why I use controlled pressure and a suitable cleaning treatment rather than simply putting a high-pressure nozzle directly onto the stone.

WHY I DON’T USE EXCESSIVE PRESSURE

Excessive pressure can potentially remove small pieces of soft sandstone and may leave the surface rough or uneven.

A good clean isn’t just about how much dirt you can remove.

It’s about removing the contamination while looking after the paving underneath it.

WHY I DON’T CLEAN EVERY SANDSTONE PATIO THE SAME WAY

Every sandstone patio is different.

The age of the paving, type of sandstone, surface condition, amount of contamination and previous cleaning can all affect the approach.

A relatively new patio with light algae growth may require a very different treatment from an older patio covered in established lichen and black spotting.

That’s why I assess the surface before deciding how aggressively it should be cleaned.

There is no single cleaning interval that suits every patio. Shading, surrounding vegetation, moisture, weather exposure and how the area is used can all affect how quickly algae and moss return.

3. CAN YOU REMOVE BLACK SPOTS FROM SANDSTONE?

Black spotting and lichen can often be treated and significantly improved. However, the final result depends on how established the staining is and the condition of the sandstone.

4. CAN OLD SANDSTONE PATIOS BE CLEANED?

Yes, many older sandstone patios can be cleaned successfully. However, older stone should be assessed first because weathering, loose pointing, cracks and surface deterioration can affect the cleaning method.

6. DO YOU USE A ROTARY SURFACE CLEANER ON SANDSTONE?

I don’t automatically use a rotary surface cleaner on natural sandstone. Delicate stone needs to be assessed individually, and I prefer a controlled approach where appropriate.

7. CAN YOU CLEAN SANDSTONE AROUND A SWIMMING POOL?

Yes. Suitable sandstone pool surrounds can be cleaned carefully, taking account of the pool, surrounding surfaces, pointing, drainage and runoff.

Yes. I clean suitable sandstone pathways, steps, walkways, entrance areas and other outdoor stone surfaces.

9. DO YOU PROVIDE PROTECTIVE TREATMENTS?

Where appropriate, suitable treatments can be discussed after cleaning. The correct treatment depends on the stone and what you want to achieve.

10. HOW LONG DOES SANDSTONE CLEANING TAKE?

The time depends on the size and condition of the area, accessibility and how heavily contaminated the sandstone is. Smaller areas may take several hours, while larger or heavily contaminated areas can take longer.
