Natural sandstone is one of my favourite surfaces to clean. After around 20 years working in exterior cleaning, I’ve cleaned sandstone patios and pathways of all different sizes and conditions, and I still enjoy seeing the natural colours come back through the stone.

Over time, sandstone can become covered in dirt, algae, moss, lichen and stubborn black spots, leaving the surface looking dull and completely different from how it originally looked.

At The Jet Wash Fella, I don’t simply turn up and blast a sandstone patio with a pressure washer. Sandstone is a relatively soft natural stone, so using excessive pressure can damage the surface and even remove small pieces of the stone, leaving an uneven and sometimes sharp finish.

Instead, I use a combination of suitable cleaning products, controlled pressure and careful preparation to get the best possible result while treating the sandstone with the care it needs.

How We Clean Natural Sandstone Patios

Every sandstone patio is different, so I don’t use the same pressure or cleaning method on every surface. I assess the condition of the sandstone first and then choose the most suitable approach.

Step 1 – Clear and Prepare the Area

Before cleaning begins, I clear the area and sweep away loose leaves, dirt and other debris. This gives me a clean surface to work with and allows me to see the condition of the sandstone properly.

Step 2 – Apply a Soft-Wash Cleaning Solution

I then apply a suitable soft-wash cleaning product across the sandstone. The solution helps break down dirt, algae, moss, lichen and general grime before the pressure washing begins.

Step 3 – Allow the Solution to Dwell

The cleaning solution is allowed to dwell on the surface for around 10–15 minutes. It is important that the product does not dry out during this time, as the dwell period helps loosen the organic growth and stubborn dirt.

Step 4 – Controlled Jet Washing

Once the cleaning solution has had time to work, I carefully jet wash the sandstone using the correct pressure for the surface.

Sandstone is a relatively soft natural stone, so excessive pressure can remove small slithers from the surface of the slabs. This can leave the patio looking uneven and can create sharp edges or damaged areas.

Using the correct pressure is therefore just as important as having the right cleaning products.

Removing Stubborn Lichen and Black Spots

Some areas of a sandstone patio can be more heavily affected by lichen and stubborn black spots. These areas may need to be treated and cleaned more than once rather than simply increasing the pressure.

The aim is to achieve the best possible clean without damaging the sandstone in the process.

The result can be a dramatic transformation, bringing back the natural colours and character that make sandstone such an attractive paving material.

Bringing Back the Natural Colour of Sandstone

One of the things I love about cleaning natural sandstone is seeing the colours come back through the stone.

When sandstone is covered in dirt, algae, moss, lichen and black spots, you can often lose sight of just how much natural colour and character is underneath. Once the surface has been properly cleaned, the difference can be dramatic.

Natural sandstone can look particularly vibrant when it is wet. As the stone dries, some of those colours naturally become lighter again. If you want to keep more of that richer appearance, I can also advise you on sealing the sandstone after cleaning.

The aim isn’t simply to make the patio look darker or wetter. It’s about protecting the freshly cleaned sandstone while helping to bring out and maintain its natural colour.
