A REAL SLIPPERY SANDSTONE PATIO CLEANING JOB IN POUND HILL, CRAWLEY

One recent patio cleaning project took place in Pound Hill, Crawley.

The customer had a natural sandstone patio that had become very dirty and slippery. The patio had accumulated algae, general dirt and the small black spots of lichen that are often particularly difficult to remove from natural stone.

The owner was considering having the patio repointed with sand and cement, but before doing that they wanted to have the existing sandstone properly cleaned.

The photographs show the difference that can be achieved when the correct cleaning method is used rather than simply relying on very high pressure.

HOW I CLEANED THIS SLIPPERY SANDSTONE PATIO

Natural sandstone needs to be treated with care.

It is a relatively soft stone, so simply turning up the pressure and trying to blast everything from the surface is not necessarily the best approach.

For this patio, I started with a soft-washing treatment designed to loosen the dirt and organic growth.

The product was applied across the sandstone and allowed a short dwell period so that it could work on the contamination.

This part of the process is particularly important when dealing with lichen.

The small black spots that appear across sandstone can be surprisingly stubborn. Trying to remove them using pressure alone can mean using more pressure than is appropriate for the stone.

Instead, the soft-washing treatment helps break down and loosen the organic contamination before the pressure-cleaning stage.

Once the treatment had been allowed to work, I cleaned the sandstone using a pressure washer at moderate pressure, rather than unnecessarily aggressive pressure.

The aim was to remove the dirt and contamination while being careful not to damage the sandstone itself.

The complete job took approximately six hours.

WHY SOFT WASHING IS IMPORTANT WHEN CLEANING SANDSTONE

When people see a pressure washer being used, it is easy to assume that the pressure itself is doing all of the cleaning.

That isn’t necessarily the case.

For natural sandstone, the cleaning treatment can do a large part of the work by loosening algae, organic growth, dirt and lichen before the pressure-cleaning stage.

This allows the pressure washer to be used more carefully.

I particularly like this approach when cleaning older or softer sandstone because there is little benefit in damaging the surface simply to remove contamination.

The small black lichen spots are a good example.

They can be extremely difficult to remove with pressure alone, while an appropriate soft-washing treatment can help loosen them first.

USING A COMMERCIAL ELECTRIC KÄRCHER PRESSURE WASHER

You can see my smaller commercial Kärcher electric pressure washer in the background of the photographs from this project.

I use electric equipment where it is practical because it can help keep noise levels down, particularly when working around residential properties.

Petrol pressure washers have their place for larger commercial jobs and locations where greater power or independence from an electricity supply is required.

For smaller residential patio cleaning projects, however, an electric commercial pressure washer can be a useful option where the property has a suitable outside water supply and electrical connection.

The equipment is only one part of the job, though.

Knowing how and when to use the pressure is just as important.

CLEANING A SLIPPERY PATIO BEFORE REPOINTING

In this particular Pound Hill project, the customer was considering having the sandstone patio repointed with sand and cement.

Cleaning the existing surface first was therefore an important step.

A patio can look very different once the accumulated dirt, algae, lichen and organic growth have been removed.

Cleaning before undertaking further work can help reveal the actual condition and colour of the existing stone.

In some cases, customers may decide to carry out additional repairs or repointing after cleaning. In other cases, they may simply be surprised by how much better the existing patio looks once it has been thoroughly cleaned.

The important thing is to clean and assess the patio before automatically assuming that it needs replacing or extensive remedial work.
