Once the area has dried sufficiently, re-sanding can be carried out where required to replace sand lost from the joints during cleaning.

The condition and size of the existing joints will always be considered before recommending re-sanding.

SANDSTONE PATIO CLEANING IN BURGESS HILL

Sandstone is one of my favourite surfaces to clean, but it needs to be treated with care.

Natural sandstone is relatively soft and porous compared with many modern paving materials. Too much pressure can remove small layers or slivers of stone and can leave the surface uneven or damaged.

My approach is to assess the sandstone first, clear away loose debris and apply a suitable specialist soft-wash treatment.

The treatment is allowed to dwell while being kept from drying out, usually for around 10–15 minutes depending on the conditions and contamination.

The sandstone can then be carefully pressure cleaned using controlled pressure appropriate for the condition of the stone.

Stubborn areas such as black spotting or lichen may require additional treatment rather than simply increasing the pressure.

The objective is to clean the sandstone properly while helping to preserve its natural colour and character.

BLACK SPOT, LICHEN, MOSS AND ALGAE REMOVAL

Black spots on patios are a common problem, particularly on natural stone.

They can be difficult to remove completely with pressure alone, which is why treatment can form an important part of the cleaning process.

Depending on the surface and condition, I can treat areas affected by:

Results can vary depending on the age of the staining, the type of surface and how deeply the contamination has affected the material.

HOW I CLEAN A PATIO OR DRIVEWAY

Every job is slightly different, so I assess the surface before deciding how it should be cleaned.

1. SURFACE ASSESSMENT

I look at the material, condition of the surface, pointing or joints, drainage and the type of contamination present.

2. CLEARING THE AREA

Loose debris, leaves, weeds and other material are cleared where necessary so the cleaning process can be carried out properly.

3. PRE-TREATMENT

Where appropriate, a suitable cleaning or soft-wash treatment can be applied to help loosen and treat organic growth and built-up contamination.

4. CONTROLLED PRESSURE CLEANING

The surface is then cleaned using pressure appropriate to the material and condition.

The pressure required for block paving or concrete may be very different from what is suitable for older or softer natural stone.

5. RINSING AND FINISHING

The area is thoroughly rinsed and checked for remaining areas of contamination.

If the job involves block paving and re-sanding is required, this can be completed once the surface is ready.

WHY NOT JUST USE THE HIGHEST PRESSURE?

More pressure does not automatically mean a better clean.

A professional exterior cleaner should understand when pressure is appropriate and when another approach is needed.

On hard surfaces, higher pressure may be suitable in certain circumstances. On softer or more delicate materials, excessive pressure can cause unnecessary damage.

This is particularly important with natural sandstone and older paving.

My approach is based on getting the best practical result while respecting the surface being cleaned.

Some patios and driveways have simply been left for years.

That does not necessarily mean they need replacing.

Built-up dirt, moss, algae, weeds and weathering can make an otherwise sound surface look considerably worse than it actually is.

The final result will always depend on the age and condition of the paving, but the difference can be dramatic.
